Between Power of Attorney, signing Estate Planning Documents, or completing Real Estate Packages, one of the most important things you’ll need to get started for notarization is valid identification.
As a Mobile Notary Public serving Snohomish County, I’m often asked:
“What kind of ID do I need for this to be legal?”
It’s a simple step—but one that makes all the difference.
Washington State requires that each signer provide government-issued photo ID that is current (or not expired no more than 3 years past the expiration date from the date of notarization) and includes a physical description, signature, and photo of the individual.
A valid Washington State driver’s license or ID card
A current U.S. or foreign passport
A military ID card
A Permanent Resident (Green) Card
A Government issued tribal ID
A Notary may ask for additional identifying documentation at anytime to ensure compliance with our state laws, rules, and regulations for conducting a true legal notarization.
As a notary, I’m legally responsible for validating identity before a document can be notarized. Bringing the proper ID keeps your appointment smooth, efficient, and successful for all parties involved.
💡 Pro Tip: If you’re helping a loved one at a hospital, rehab center, or assisted living facility, check that they have their valid ID with them before the appointment.
